Introduction
Australia is a country that has a lot going for it. We’re well known for our natural beauty, our unique wildlife, our culture and history. But there are some things we do better than the rest of the world – things so important to us that we’ve made them quintessentially Australian! So let’s get started by taking a look at some of those things:
We have the best beaches.
Australia has more beaches than any other country in the world. We also have some of the best and most beautiful beaches in the world. The Gold Coast, which is just north of Brisbane, is home to some of Australia’s most famous surf beaches. If you want pristine sand and clear waters then head down south to Tasmania or Victoria where you’ll find some amazing national parks with pristine white sands that stretch for miles on end!
We have the longest coastline.
Australia has the longest coastline in the world. Our 25,760 km-long shoreline is longer than any other continent’s and includes more than 3,000 beaches. The combined coastlines of all other continents are still shorter than ours, so you can see why we’re so proud of it!
We’ve also got some pretty crazy beachfront properties: there are more than 300 islands off our east coast alone; Tasmania has more than 60 major rivers; and Western Australia is home to some of the oldest rocks on Earth (some date back 2 billion years).
Our wildlife is unique and diverse.
Australia’s wildlife is unique and diverse. From the kangaroo to koala, we have a wide variety of animals that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. While many Aussies may be familiar with our famous marsupials like wombats and kangaroos, there are plenty of other creatures lurking around our country as well.
Many people don’t realize how much nature we have here: Australia has over 600 species of birds (including parrots), 10{a6d4e250f4dbd7c38290d51a301669b0b15c2bd58d8474132f85a8137f152abc} of all known snake species and some dangerous critters like saltwater crocodiles–the largest reptiles on earth!
We have a fascinating history and culture.
Australia is a land of many cultures, and it has an interesting history. You may want to know more about the country you’re visiting, but what are the best ways to do it? Here are some suggestions:
- Read a book! There are plenty of great books written by Australians or about Australia that will give you a good understanding of our country and its culture. Some examples include The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough, The Picture -Drawing by Patrick White (also known as Voss), and My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante.*
- Watch movies! Movies set in Australia can also be helpful because they tend to show aspects of everyday life here that aren’t covered in other forms of media like TV shows or books.* For example: Rabbit Proof Fence .
We’re known for our mateship and larrikinism.
Australian culture is built on a foundation of mateship and larrikinism. Mateship means looking out for each other, which you’ll see in many of our everyday interactions: like when someone holds open a door for you or offers to help carry your groceries. Larrikinism, meanwhile, refers to being cheeky or funny in order to get what you want–like how Australians love making fun of New Zealanders (their country’s neighbor) because they know it annoys them!
As an Australian myself, I’ve always been proud of my heritage’s history with mateship and larrikinism–and now that pride has even been recognized by UNESCO as part of its Intangible Cultural Heritage list!
Our cities are world-class, with amazing architecture and culture.
Australia’s cities are world-class, with amazing architecture and culture.
Melbourne is known for its art deco buildings, including the Royal Exhibition Building (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), which was built in 1880. Sydney is famous for its Opera House and Harbour Bridge; both have been featured on countless postcards and Instagram accounts around the world.
Brisbane also boasts some stunning architecture–Federation Square is a modern building that blends in with the city’s history; there are also plenty of old brick warehouses for when you want to feel like you’re living in a film noir movie set during Prohibition!
Our food is amazing – for everything from traditional to modern cuisine.
Australia has a rich and diverse food culture, with a wide range of different cuisines. We’re known for our freshness, quality and popularity around the world. Our cuisine is also healthy and nutritious which means you can enjoy it every day without feeling guilty!
Our traditional Australian dishes are some of the best in the world – think grilled steak and barbecued meat (or sausages) with potato or corn on the cob; pavlova; lamingtons; Anzac biscuits…the list goes on!
Our modern-day Aussie cuisine has been influenced by Asian flavours as well as other international influences such as Italian or French cuisine. You’ll find plenty of examples at restaurants around town (or even in your local supermarket).
We have a great sense of humour, which is often self-deprecating and always clever.
We have a great sense of humour, which is often self-deprecating and always clever. We can laugh at ourselves, but we also know how to make fun of other people. We are masters of sarcasm and irony–and we’re not afraid to use them!
Australians have their own unique way of being funny that sets us apart from other countries’ sense of humour (and sometimes even our own). Our jokes can be subtle or obvious depending on what you’re used to hearing in your home country; they might even seem rude at first glance but turn out hilarious when you get the punchline!
Our beer is world class – and will soon be brewed in space! We have craft breweries popping up all over Australia now, but they’re nothing compared to what’s coming next – because soon beer will be brewed on an orbiting space station called BEAM (Brewing Exploration Applications Module) by Budweiser parent company Anheuser Busch InBev! It’ll be on board the International Space Station later this year, taking a small step towards astronauts being able to drink while they look at Earth from above as they orbit Earth! Now that’s going somewhere special!
You know how Australians love their beer? Well, we’re about to take that love one step further. Beer is a major part of our national identity – it’s even in our national anthem! So when we heard that Budweiser was going to brew their very own space beer called BEAM (Brewing Exploration Applications Module) on board the International Space Station later this year, we knew this was something special.
Budweiser parent company Anheuser Busch InBev has partnered with NASA for the project and released this teaser video showing what they’ve been working on:
Conclusion
